Little League Uniform Rules: What Coaches and League Boards Need to Know Before Ordering
Updated 2026-10-17
The Little League uniform requirements that affect a custom order: numbers, sleeve colors for pitchers, sponsor placement, pants and what a league can decide locally.
Why this matters before the proof
Most uniform rules are simple, but a league board that approves a design and then hears from an umpire about sleeve color in April has a problem. The rules below are the ones that come up on real orders. Your district and local league can add to them, so check your league's own guidelines too. This guide is a summary from our side as a supplier and is not a substitute for the current rulebook.
Numbers
| Item | Common rule | What to order |
|---|---|---|
| Back number | 6 in or taller, contrasting | 6–8 in numbers with an outline |
| Pitcher sleeves | Not white or grey | Solid dark undershirts |
| Sponsor | Back shoulders or sleeve | One-color sponsor text |
| Pants | Same color across the team | One pant color per team |
- Every player needs a number on the back of the jersey, at least 6 inches tall for Little League divisions.
- Numbers must contrast with the jersey so they can be read from the stands and by the official scorer.
- Numbers should be unique within a team. Order a few spares with unused numbers for late sign-ups.
- Front numbers are optional and usually 4 inches.
Pitchers and sleeves
A pitcher may not wear an undershirt or sleeve that is white or grey, or anything an umpire judges distracting to the batter. In practice: if your jersey is white, order colored undershirts for pitchers, and if you order sleeveless vests, give pitchers a solid dark undershirt. We make long sleeve baseball shirts in any solid team color for this reason.
Sponsors and lettering
Local leagues can carry a sponsor's name on the uniform. The usual placement is across the back shoulders above the number or on a sleeve, and many districts prefer that the sponsor not be larger than the team or league name. Tobacco, alcohol and gambling sponsors are not allowed. The league name and division often go on the chest or sleeve so teams across the league look related.
Caps, pants and the rest
- Caps are standard and should match within a team; fitted, stretch-fit and youth sizes are all fine.
- Pants should be the same color across the team. Knickers with visible socks are the traditional Little League look.
- Shoes with metal cleats are not allowed in the younger divisions; that is a shoe rule, not a uniform rule, but parents ask.
- Jewelry is off; medical alert items are allowed and should be taped down.
What the league can decide locally
Colors per team, whether names go on the back, whether every team shares one design, and how sponsors are placed are all local decisions. Boards that order the whole league from one design in different colors get a consistent look on picture day and a bigger volume discount, and we build one proof sheet with every team on it. The Little League uniforms page is set up for that kind of order.
- Ask your district for its current uniform guidelines.
- Agree team colors and sponsor placement as a board.
- Order one design in each team's colors.
- Approve one proof sheet that shows every team.
