How to Design a Custom Baseball Jersey (Step by Step, With the Mistakes to Avoid)
Updated 2026-10-17
A practical walkthrough of designing a team baseball jersey: colors, logo placement, numbers, fonts, stripes, sponsor marks, and the common mistakes that show up on proofs.
Start with what cannot change
Before colors or fonts, settle the things the league fixes: number size and color contrast, whether pitchers may wear white sleeves, whether a collar or placket is required, and where sponsor marks are allowed. Little League, PONY, CIF sections and adult leagues each have a line or two on this. Get those into the brief first and the design will not need a late revision.
The nine decisions, in order
- Primary and secondary color. Two colors plus white or grey. Send a Pantone code or a photo of an existing uniform so the match is exact.
- Jersey cut. Full-button, two-button, V-neck or sleeveless. This changes where chest lettering can sit.
- Body style. Solid, two-tone raglan, pinstripe, fade, or a side panel in the second color.
- Chest. Team name in script or block, or a logo. Arched names read best on a V-neck; a logo over the heart suits a full-button.
- Back number. 8 inches for adults, 6 inches for youth, in a color that contrasts with the body. Add a 6 mm outline if the body is patterned.
- Back name. 2.5-inch block letters, arched above the number. Optional, but parents like it.
- Sleeves. Solid, contrast, pinstripe, or a logo on the left sleeve and a number on the right.
- Sponsor marks. Back shoulders above the number, or a sleeve. Keep them one color if you can.
- Trim. Collar and cuff color, piping down the side seam, and whether pants carry the same stripe.
Fonts that work on a jersey
Numbers need a block or varsity font with thick strokes; thin fonts disappear at 60 feet. Team names can be script, but keep the script heavy and the letters connected so it reads from the stands. Avoid more than two fonts on the jersey. If you do not have a font in mind, say "classic block" or "varsity script" on the order and the designer will pick one that fits the look.
| Element | Font style that works | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Back numbers | Block or varsity, thick strokes | Thin or condensed fonts |
| Chest team name | Heavy connected script or block | Light handwriting scripts |
| Player names | 2.5-inch block capitals | Lowercase script |
| Sponsor text | Simple sans serif, one color | Text under 1 inch tall |
Mistakes we fix on proofs every week
- Numbers in a color too close to the body (navy on black, gold on white): add an outline or change the number color.
- Chest script running across the button line on a full-button jersey so a letter gets split: we shift the script so the button line falls between letters.
- A logo that is really a photo or a screenshot with a white box around it: send a PNG with transparency or let us redraw it.
- Sponsor text too small to read: 1 inch tall minimum for text, 3 inches wide for a logo.
- Pinstripes that stop at the placket: we run them through unless you ask otherwise.
- Forgetting the pants. The stripe on the pants should match the jersey trim; order them together.
What to send us
A logo file (vector if you have it), your colors, the cut you want, and a sentence or two about the look. A photo of a jersey you like is worth a paragraph. If you have nothing but a team name, that is fine too; the designer will build a first proof from the name and colors. Start on the design your jerseys page and the first proof lands in 1–2 business days.
Related questions
How big should the numbers be on a baseball jersey?
8 inches tall on the back for adults, 6 inches for youth, in a color that contrasts with the body. Front numbers are usually 4 inches.
What file format do you need for our logo?
Vector (AI, EPS, SVG, PDF) is best. A clear PNG with a transparent background works; a photo or screenshot can be redrawn by our designers at no charge.
How many colors can a sublimated jersey have?
Unlimited, at no extra cost.
Where should the sponsor go?
Across the back shoulders above the number, or on a sleeve. Keep it to one color for a clean look.
Can we see the design before we pay?
Yes. A proof is sent within 1–2 business days of the order and nothing is invoiced until you approve it.
How many revisions do we get?
As many as it takes. Most teams approve within two rounds.
Can each player have a different name and number?
Yes, included.
What fonts are best for jersey numbers?
Thick block or varsity fonts. Thin or decorative fonts are hard to read from the stands.
Should the pants match the jersey?
Yes if you want a uniform look. We print the pant stripe from the same file as the jersey trim so the colors are identical.
Can you copy a pro team's design?
We can build a design inspired by a look you like in your own team name and colors. We do not reproduce trademarked logos.
