Button-Up vs Two-Button vs V-Neck: Which Baseball Jersey Cut Is Right for Your Team?
Updated 2026-10-17
A plain comparison of full-button, two-button and V-neck pullover baseball jerseys: look, cost, comfort, league rules, and which programs choose each.
The three fronts
Almost every baseball jersey is one of three things: a full-button jersey that opens all the way down, a two-button pullover with a short placket at the neck, or a V-neck pullover with no placket at all. Crew-neck pullovers exist too and behave like the V-neck. The fabric, print and sizing are the same across all three on our site; the front is the decision.
| Cut | Opens | Look | Our price | Easiest for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full-button | Fully | Traditional, varsity, pro | From $34.99 | High school, adult leagues |
| Two-button | At the neck | Finished, modern-classic | From $31.99 | Youth, travel ball |
| V-neck pullover | No | Clean, light | From $32.99 | Hot weather, youth, rec |
Full-button jerseys
The full-button front is the jersey of baseball tradition. Six buttons, a placket, often a fold-down collar, and a boxier cut designed to sit over an undershirt. It costs a few dollars more because the placket is sewn and bar-tacked, and it needs a careful print so the chest lettering lines up across the buttons.
Programs that play in front of parents and scouts pick it: high school varsity, college club, men's wood-bat leagues. Young players find six buttons slow, and a full-button jersey is the warmest of the three because of the double layer at the placket.
Two-button jerseys
A two-button henley placket gives the jersey a finished neckline without the full front. It pulls over the head, so there is no fiddling with buttons, and the chest print is unbroken below the placket. It is the most common cut in Little League and youth travel ball, and a good middle option for adult rec teams that want a uniform look without the full-button price.
V-neck pullovers
No placket, no buttons, a self-fabric V collar. This is the lightest cut and the fastest to dry, which is why Central Valley and desert programs order it for summer. The entire chest is one clean panel, so large logos, arched names and front numbers look their best here. A few high school sections require a collar or placket on varsity jerseys, so check the rule before putting a whole varsity roster in V-necks.
Choosing by program
- 8U–12U rec and Little League: two-button or V-neck. Easy on, easy off, easy to size.
- Travel ball 10U–14U: two-button home, V-neck or sleeveless for hot tournaments.
- High school varsity: full-button with collar; JV often in two-button to save money and stay distinguishable.
- Adult rec: two-button or V-neck, whichever the team likes the look of.
- Wood-bat and over-30 leagues: full-button pinstripes, the traditional look.
Cost over a season
The price gap between cuts is small per jersey but adds up across a club. A 60-player club saves about $300 choosing two-button over full-button for the same design. Many clubs put the varsity-age team in full-button and the younger teams in two-button; the design is identical so the club still looks like one program. The button-up baseball jerseys and two-button pages share the same fabric and print process, so mixing them in one order is straightforward.
- Check your league or section rule on collars and plackets.
- Match the cut to the youngest players on the roster.
- Pick full-button only where the traditional look matters.
- Keep one design across cuts so the program still matches.
Related questions
What is the difference between a two-button and a full-button baseball jersey?
A two-button jersey is a pullover with a short placket at the neck; a full-button opens all the way down the front. Two-button is lighter and cheaper, full-button looks more traditional.
Which jersey is best for Little League?
Two-button or V-neck pullovers. Young players handle them easily and the pullover body is simpler to size across a roster.
Are V-neck jerseys allowed in high school baseball?
Usually, but some sections require a placket or collar on varsity jerseys. Check your section's uniform rule before ordering.
Do full-button jerseys cost more?
Yes, by about $3–5 per jersey, because the placket is sewn and the front print has to be aligned across the buttons.
Which cut is coolest in hot weather?
The V-neck pullover, or a sleeveless vest. Both have no placket layer and dry fastest.
Can we mix cuts in one order?
Yes. Any mix counts toward the same minimum and discount tier.
Does the chest lettering break at the buttons?
Not on ours. The front is printed as one panel and the placket cut afterwards so lettering and stripes line up.
Can a two-button jersey have a collar?
Yes, a fold-down collar is available on two-button and full-button cuts.
Which cut do adult leagues prefer?
Wood-bat and traditional leagues pick full-button; rec and company leagues pick two-button or V-neck.
Is a crew neck the same as a V-neck?
In fit and price, yes. Only the collar shape differs.
